Our exclusive craftsmen carve out a genuine wood use their "maki-e" techniques to hand-paint the classical motif of a plum and apply a smooth coat of urushi lacquer to finish. Such process is so elaborate that even those few craftsmen who are skilled enough can create at most 3 sets per year.

Ume ( 梅 Plum )

A plum has long been one of the favourite flowers of the Japanese for its pink colour and sweet scent. It gives seemingly opposite images of innocence and strong fibre at the same time both from how it flourishes during the winter.

Upon the coming of the thaw a plum bears its flowers before any other plants do. The contrast deep pink fluttering in white of the snow touches hearts of the Japanese so much that it appears in traditional arts almost as often as a cherry blossom Japan's national flower does.

Its energy along with elegance in the visual has associated a plum with a wish for numerous life events to flourish.

PLUM FLOWERS in Vivid Colours and Smooth Strokes.

Hand-painted by using "iro urushi" (colour lacquer). Our craftsmen mix raw lacquer with dyes just before starting painting so that they can adjust the mixing combinations depending on the day's temperature and humidity.

CLOUDS with Faded Nuance of Delicate Sparkles.

Finished with a special type of "maki-e" technique called "byakudan finishing." A design is first drawn in silver powder and then paint-coated with urushi lacquer adding gentle nuance to the overall colour and texture.
