  • This is a lacquered wooden bowl adorned with gold leaf and iris blossoms.

The iris (kakitsubata) has been celebrated in Japanese art since the Heian period, immortalized in the classic tale 'Ise Monogatari' as a symbol of longing and refined sensibility. This bowl draws on that legacy, presenting deep purple irises and vivid green foliage against a luminous gold leaf ground — a composition reminiscent of the celebrated folding screen 'Kakitsubata-zu Byobu' by master lacquer artist Ogata Korin, now treasured as a National Treasure. The bowl form carries the design on a curving, bowl-shaped surface so that the pattern may be appreciated from any angle.
