  • This is a round lacquered plate depicting an octopus, a traditional symbol of good fortune.

This round plate comes from the "Sea Plate" series, in which lacquer craftsmen hand-paint the characters of creatures that live in the sea. The octopus, spreading its body in the ocean depths, has long been cherished as a lucky charm: with its suckers it is said to "draw in fortune and never let go," and its name can be written with characters that read "much happiness." The octopus's legs are painted all around the rim with ink accents here and there, giving the design a lively sense of movement.
Gold powder is dusted into the ink in places, so it glints from black to gold as the light catches it. May it be a plate on which your treasured memories keep spreading and growing.
