This box is decorated with a weeping cherry tree, a graceful and poetic variety often seen in Japan's temples and gardens and loved overseas as a symbol of quiet elegance and spiritual beauty. Rendered in Maki-e, the white blossoms are dusted with pale pink metallic powder and the pink blossoms with a deeper shade, so the petals shimmer in a soft gradation when light catches them, while the slender branches are picked out in silver and the stamens in raised gold.
